Update: November 2011
Frigidaire recently came out with a newer model for this dehumidifier. I have a full review of the Frigidaire 704DUD on this website so that you can learn more. The newer model offers many of the same great features as this model with a few really cool improvements. They are still selling the FAD704TDP though so read over this review and find out how you can pick up one for a good discounted price.
The Frigidaire works by using fans to pull in moist air from the surrounding area. Once inside the device, the air goes across cold coils which then condense or draw moisture out of the air. This is the same thing that happens when you sit out a cold drink glass in a warm room. The warm air hits the cold glass and water forms on it, dripping down the sides, which mean you need to run and get a coaster.
In the FAD704 the condensed water forms on the coils and drips down into a container. The container can either be emptied by hand or using a hose. After being dried out the air then passes over a set of warm coils and is then pushed back out into the room through side louvers.
There are a couple of key features you need to look for in a great humidity lowering device.
The Frigidaire has a nice digital control panel that shows all of the operating functions. You can see what the relative humidity level is in the room and you can adjust the moisture levels. Just press the up or down buttons to raise or lower the relative humidity levels. On the FAD704 you can set this from 35-85% in increments of 5%. You also have the option to run the unit in Continuous Mode, which means that it will run constantly at high fan speed regardless of the surrounding dampness levels. This is a great feature to use when you first put the appliance in a really damp room and should help to eliminate any odors that are present as well.
In addition to easy controls, it is also very easy to move the entire unit around the room. There are caster wheels and top and side handles.
