If you home smells musty or has mildew or mold, you may need a dehumidifier. Humidity is a result of extra moisture in your air. This humidity can cause your home to smell funny and produce mold, especially in bathrooms. Humidity cannot make you sick by itself, but if you start getting mold or mildew, it could cause allergy symptoms and sinus infections. If you are worried about mold, mildew, musty smells and your health, you should consider the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier.

One of the great features of this dehumidifier is the automatic capabilities of the machine. It makes it very convenient to use, because you simply press a couple of buttons and go on about your daily routine. I especially like being able to just set my dehumidifier up and let it operate essentially hands off. A few of the automatic features include:

Auto Defrost

The evaporator coils of the dehumidifier can develop frost from being used in lower temperatures. This could damage your machine; therefore, the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier contains an automatic defrosting mechanism so you can use it year round with no worry about damage to the machine. It is designed to operate in temperatures as low as 41 degrees Fahrenheit, which makes it perfect for cool, unheated basements.

Auto Shut-Off

Your dehumidifier will shut off automatically when the water container is full. Once the container is empty again, the machine will turn itself back on. This reduces the risk of flooding the dehumidifier because it will not continue to suck up outside moisture once the container is completely full. You then have to empty the water by hand if you choose, or set up an automatic drain hose. With the auto-drain option just screw a standard garden hose into the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier and let gravity drain the water into a drain in the floor of the room. You also have the option to add a pump to the unit so that you are not reliant solely on gravity. With an electric pump you can automatically pump the water to anything above the machine, including a sink, or even out the window.

This video highlights some of the features of the BHD-651-G.

Indicator Lights

This dehumidifier contains an air filter check indicator light and a light that tells you that the water collection bucket is full and it is time to empty it. These help you regulate your machine and keep it working at full benefit. The check air filter light comes on after 250 hours of operation. This lets you know it’s time to clean the air filter. The air filter is a nice bonus that comes with many dehumidifiers. The filter effectively removes dust or other floating particles in the air as is passes through the dehumidifier.

When the water collection container is full the dehumidifier will beep 8 times and the full indicator light will flash to let you know it’s time to dump the bucket. The bucket comes out of the front and is easy to remove. There is also a convenient carry handle so you can move and dump the water without spilling it.

Automatic Restart Feature

This feature is mainly used in case of a power outage. This benefit gives you peace of mind in knowing that when the power comes back on, your dehumidifier will resume its operation. You will not have to worry about remembering to turn the unit back on once the power returns. The BHD-651G will also keep the same settings it had before the power went off. This way you don’t have to reprogram the timer or humidity settings on the control panel.

There is also automatic compressor protection built-in to this model designed to help increase its lifespan. There is a 3 minute compressor time delay built into the unit. After it has stopped, you cannot restart the machine for 3 minutes.

An Easy to Use Control Panel

The Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier comes with a digital screen and easy buttons to push. There are no confusing modes and different screens. You simply choose what you want and go on with your routine. You can set the Comfort-Aire to start or stop automatically using the timer setting controls and adjusting them from 1 to 24 hours in one hour increments or .5 to 10 hours in half hour increments.

The digital display will show the actual humidity level in the room (accurate to within + or – 5%) in a range of 30% to 90% relative humidity. And you can set the relative humidity level from 35-85% in increments of 5%.

When you’ve shut the machine off and want to store it away for a while, it has a power cord band that lets you neatly wrap the cord on the back of the unit.

Comfort-Aire recommends running the unit continuously for 24 hours for the first time you use it. You can read more about operating and caring for this unit in the Comfort-Aire BHD651G Dehumidifier owner’s manual. I also have a brochure which gives a quick overview of the different models offered by Comfort-Aire.

What Are The Good Things People Are Saying?

Many people own the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G Dehumidifier and have commented on it. Everyone has commented on the great ability of this machine to remove water. Some have even said that it removed moisture from the air of areas that did not feel humid. They also all mentioned that water was showing up in the bucket after only about one hour of use.

Many have also said that the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G is easy to set up and use because of the easy to understand buttons and display screen. They also mention the ease of moving the machine because it has rolling wheels on the bottom, and only weigh 42 pounds which make is great for use in multiple rooms.

Of those who purchased the machine solely for musty smells, they have all reported those smells have gone away completely. For those who had mold growth or mildew, once the mold was cleaned thoroughly and removed, it did not grown back.

Many others have mentioned the ease of removing the bucket. Remember, your bucket will be full of water, so easy removal is a must. It also includes a handle on the bucket, to make carrying it to the drainage area easier.

A few have also complimented the machine and makers for the indicator lights. There is one light to let you know to change the filter and one light to let you know the water bucket needs to be emptied. These work great and are a big help in keeping your machine running properly and keeping your home at a comfortable humidity level.

All in all, the vast majority of people who have purchased this product have loved it. I found over 60 customer reviews of the Comfort-Aire BHD-651-G on a variety of different retailer websites. Overall owners really love this model. It gets an average score of 4.7 out of 5 stars, which is excellent. Over 96% of reviewers give the BHD-651-G 4 or 5 stars out of 5.

What Are The Bad Things People Are Saying?

Most of the comments are good, but there are a few negative comments. The most common negative complaint is that once you shut the machine off to remove the water bucket, you have to wait four to five minutes before removing the bucket, or the draining process will not be complete and it will leak into the machine. However, by waiting a few minutes before emptying, this problem goes away. Others have mentioned the noise level makes it impossible to leave in the bedroom at night. It is not as loud as other machines, but is still very noisy and keeps some people up at night. They mention putting it right beside the bedroom door; it will still pull the moisture out of the room, but will be less noisy.

Still others have mentioned that it is large and bulky and draws attention. However, they also mention that it is worth the slight aggravation because it works extremely well. It was also mentioned a few times that the bucket is slightly difficult to put back into the machine after emptying. However, after a few times doing this, it got easier to do.

Everyone who complained about the above negatives were still so pleased with the machine that it outweighed any negative aspects.

If you need an inexpensive but very efficient dehumidifier for a space of about 400 square feet, then I have the perfect model for you. The Soleus DP1-30-03 is ideal for drying out damp rooms in your home that are not large enough to need a full 65 or 70 pint capacity dehumidifier. Why get a larger dehumidifier than you need? It costs a lot more up front and will be more expensive to run over time. A smaller capacity model like the Soleus can do the job just fine and you will be surprised at how quickly it dries your room out and gets the humidity down to a comfortable level.

Humid, damp rooms can cause molds and mildew to grow, which can be very harmful to your health. The Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier makes quick work of moisture in your home. Not only can it remove up to 30 pints of water in 24 hours, but it also has a number of convenient features that make it easy to use in any room of the house. Moreover, this dehumidifier is Energy Star rated, meaning it can save you money on energy bills. The powerful moisture removing capabilities, ease of use, and potential cost savings are just a few reasons why customers give this unit great reviews.

Maximum Mobility

The Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier was designed to be extremely easy to use and transport. This unit is very lightweight at only 33 pounds, and it comes with rolling castors and a carrying handle so it can be easily moved from room to room. The water bucket is loaded from the front, and is simple to take out and put back into place. In addition, the electronic control panel buttons are placed on the top of the machine, so they can be accessed from any side. You can place the dehumidifier in any room that has an excess of moisture in the air including basements, living rooms, bedrooms, or pantries.

Set It And Forget It

One of the most appealing features of this dehumidifier is that it requires very little maintenance. There is an alarm and an indicator light to let you know when the water bucket is full and when the filter needs to be washed. If the water bucket reaches its maximum capacity, the machine will automatically shut off until the bucket is emptied. This means you do not have to worry about water overflowing onto your floor or carpet.

If you do not want to keep emptying the bucket, the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier also comes with a garden hose that can be connected to the unit to allow for continuous drainage. Furthermore, this unit has an automatic defrost system so it can be used in cold temperatures without freezing or losing power.

Environmentally Responsible

The Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier has achieved the coveted Energy Star rating. This means that it has been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Department of Energy as being an energy efficient appliance. Energy Star appliances can save homeowners up to 35% on utility bills. Moreover, you can feel confident that you are doing your part to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. The dehumidifier also has a built in timer that can be set to 2 or 4 hours. After the time is up, the machine automatically turns off. You can also adjust the digital humidistat to a humidity setting of your choice. This way you control how much energy you use.

The Basics

This machine has all the functions you could want in a dehumidifier. The digital control panel buttons are well laid out and easy to understand. You can control the relative humidity settings on the control panel within a range of 35% to 80%, so you are sure to find a comfortable level that best suits you. You can set the machine to run continuously or to automatically shut off after a certain amount of time.

There are also three fan speeds to choose from, high, medium, and low, so you can control the amount of air that is being moved around. For areas that are excessively moist, you can hook up the hose attachment so that water continuously pours out into a drain or sink. Another great function of this dehumidifier is that it will automatically restart if a storm comes through and the power goes out in your home. This means you do not have to worry about resetting the device from the beginning again.

What Customers Like About the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier

One customer reported that within just one hour the humidity level in his basement went from 81% to 75%. The functions and buttons are easy to understand and emptying the water bucket is as simple as opening a drawer. Overall, customers are thoroughly satisfied with the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier.

What Customers Do Not Like About the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier

There were very few customers who had complaints about this dehumidifier model. That being said, there were a few who commented that the machine gave off some heat when it was running. This is true of most medium to large appliances. One way to remedy this problem is to place the device next to an air vent or to turn the thermostat down or the air conditioning up. Another problem that a few people had with the Soleus Air DP1-30-03 Dehumidifier is that they felt the water reservoir was too small. They did not like the fact that they had to constantly empty the bucket. Fortunately, the dehumidifier also comes with a hose attachment, which automatically drains the water continuously. After the hose is installed, the machine requires little maintenance when it comes to water disposal.

Overall out of more than 50 customer reviews on Amazon.com, the Soleus gets on average 4.2 out of 5 stars. Over 72% of all of the reviews are 4 or 5 stars. That is an outstanding score for a dehumidifier.
Best Place to Buy

I searched around for the best price for this model and found it on Amazon.com. They were offering the Soleus for a huge discount when I was on the site – over 40% off! That’s over $100 off the regular retail price. If that deal is still on, I would jump on it if I were you. This translates into cleaner, dryer houses and increased cost savings. In addition, the machine is easy to use, easy to move around, and it is very low maintenance.

I take care of my car like it was a member of my family. I’m always up on all the maintenance, from oil changes to engine tune ups. I make sure the pressure is optimal in all of the tires, and I always keep it clean, inside and out. That was why I was so disturbed last month when I found some rust just inside of the car, near the door. I live on the coast, in a hot humid area so I know that the salt air, wind, and moisture can wreak havoc on most automobiles. I just didn’t think it would happen so quickly, especially with me staying on top of things. I had to do something.

Well, the primary cause of rust, as you know, is moisture. So to lower the moisture inside my vehicle I needed the best car dehumidifier I could find. If my rust problem were on the outside of the car, I would need to lower the humidity levels outside the vehicle. Unfortunately I don’t have a garage so that’s not an option for me. If you do have a garage at your home, then using larger full sized dehumidifier to dry out the entire room is the best option. I talk about this some further in the article. But for keeping the inside of your car dry, a mini-dehumidifier designed especially for small spaces like the inside of a car is the best way to go.

When your car is stuck in the garage for several days or outside in the snow, moisture tends to build up inside the car, with nowhere to go. You also may notice condensation dripping inside the windows of your car, especially on cool mornings. A dehumidifier is also very important especially if you have vintage cars in your garage. The slightest hint of moisture can damage expensive upholstery, encourage the growth of molds, and promote the formation of rust in the metal parts in the interior of your car.

How Car Dehumidifiers Work

Dehumidifiers work the same way no matter where they are placed. They extract moisture from the atmosphere, which makes breathing easier for all of us. The process also makes the car feel and smell fresher and because there is no excess moisture, there is very little risk of molds and mildew from thriving on your upholstery.

There are two basic types of dehumidifiers that can be used with cars. One is a fan cooling coil system, and the other is a silica crystal based system. The larger cooling coil system machine needs a power source to run and can be used inside your car or outside in your garage. The crystal system unit doesn’t need any power to operate and is designed primarily for use in small spaces like the inside of your car.

A typical cooling coil dehumidifier uses a built-in fan that blows the air over a refrigeration system that causes condensation of water vapor. Water molecules are collected in the collection bucket. The dehumidifier automatically shuts off when the bucket is full, so you can empty the container. Most dehumidifiers also have an automatic on feature, which uses a sensor to determine if the humidity levels in the car are climbing up to uncomfortable levels, which is over 70%. The dehumidifier kicks in to bring down the humidity to more acceptable levels such 30% to 50%.

Silica crystal based systems use crystals to absorb moisture from the air. These do not need a battery or cords. They do not work with fans but instead come with moisture removing crystals that change color once they have reached their moisture-absorbing capacity. The good thing about these crystals is that they absorb moisture but retain their solid nature, eliminating the risk of water spills or leaks when the reservoir is full. All you need to do is just sit them down and the crystals start to do their job. In most models the color of the crystals will change, usually from blue or white to pink, as they absorb moisture. When the color change is complete in most models you simply plug the dehumidifier into a wall socket in a well ventilated area and the crystals will heat up and release the moisture they’ve sucked up. Then the device is ready to use again. The video below shows an Eva-Dry silica based model at work.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Car Dehumidifiers

Car dehumidifiers offer significant advantages especially if you have a vintage car or if you or members of the family are allergic to molds and mildew. Problems which can be prevented using a dehumidifier include:

Musky odors

Molds and mildew

Rotting brought by moisture

Rust

Uncomfortable Dampness

Excess moisture in enclosed spaces can wreak havoc on the interiors of your car. Aside from the musty smell that occurs when moisture is allowed to settle on leather or velour, you will also see molds and mildew thriving on the surface of your car seats, dashboard, the carpet, and on the ceiling. These can be very hard and expensive to remove. However, you need to remove them, or else you put yourself at risk for inhaling dangerous molds and other fungi that can make breathing difficult. People who are hypersensitive to fungi can also develop allergic reactions with the slightest contact with a mold spore.

There really are no disadvantages to using a car dehumidifier. With a standard fan cooling coil model you’ll have some electrical costs, but if you get an Energy Star rated model, then costs will be minimal, and certainly much less than what you would have to pay to have mold and rust removed from your car. With a silica based dehumidifier there are no electricity expenses. These models are small, so they won’t take up much space at all in your car, and they are very cheap, so your up-front investment is minimal.

Tips for Buying Car Dehumidifiers

When picking a car dehumidifier you basically need to decide if you want to dehumidify your entire garage, if you have one, or just the inside of your car. Or you could do both, depending on your budget and how humid an area you live in. If you plan to dehumidify your garage then you should definitely get a medium-sized, cooling coil, fan-based dehumidifier. Something in the 50 pints per day range should be more than enough to handle a two car garage. For a larger garage I would move up to a 70 pint model.

If you plan on just dehumidifying the inside of your car, I recommend getting silica based dehumidifier. They are ideal for the smaller space inside your car, and you can basically just set them in your car and not have to do anything but check the color of the crystals every few days. These models will also go wherever your car goes and you don’t have to worry about them spilling water when you go around a sharp turn because the water is sealed inside of the crystals. So if you have to park your car downtown in a damp parking garage while you’re at work, you know it will still be dry inside with your silica based car dehumidifier.

There are also electric dehumidifier models that come with car kits where you can plug them into your lighter. If you plan on running these for just a short period of time they are very effective at removing moisture quickly. However for longer periods of time, like running them overnight, they can quickly drain your car battery. Because high humidity can be a constant problem I recommend using a car dehumidifier on the inside of your car that will constantly be working to dry the air out. If you run a unit for a short time, then turn it off because you have to preserve your car battery, then the humidity levels will just rise again to the same high levels. So you constantly have to turn these on and off which is a real pain.

When choosing a car dehumidifier for use in your garage, look for one that has an automatic drain capacity. This means you can hook a hose up to the unit and have the collected water drain from it automatically to a drain in the floor of the garage. Most garages will have some sort of floor drain or sump so an auto-drain feature on your dehumidifier is perfect. This saves you from having to check the water collection tank and dump the water by hand when the tank fills up.

When you are looking for a unit to use inside your car, look for dehumidifiers that are 100% renewable. Most renewable units can last you up to ten years. It is also important to ensure that the units you choose are child and pet safe. Most silica based models are sealed and the silica crystals are not toxic at all.

The Best Car Dehumidifier Models

For the inside of your car I recommend the silica based Eva-Dry E-500 renewable wireless mini dehumidifier. For dehumidifying your garage I recommend the Frigidaire FAD504DUD dehumidifier.

This highly rated model is ideal for small spaces like the inside of your car, a closet, or a safe. It weighs less than 2 pounds and is only 8 inches long. It comes with a handy little hanging hook so you can hang it in your car. It is silent, has no fan or moving parts, just crystals to dehumidify the air. It doesn’t need any power to run nor does it require batteries. It is designed to dehumidify an area of up to 500 cubic feet, which is more than enough to handle the inside of a mini-van which on average has less than 200 cubic feet of space inside. The silica crystals are also non-toxic and won’t harm children or pets if they accidently break open the unit.

The Eva-Dry E-500 can absorb 8-10 ounces of water over about a 6 to 8 week time period. When the crystals are full, they will change color from blue to pink.
Conclusion

Car dehumidifiers allow you to keep the moisture out of your car or out of your entire garage. Whether you have a brand new Audi or a vintage Cadillac, keeping the right humidity level is important to ensure that musky smells, molds, and mildew are not given the chance to remain. This will also prevent rust and other problems brought by moisture from eating at the metal parts of your car’s interior and exterior.

Sometimes you don’t need a big, powerful dehumidifier. Often a small efficient model can get the job done. I know I have some closets and a bathroom or two that are really humid. It really doesn’t make sense to put a large 50 or 70 pint model in such a small space. These models are designed for areas of 1,200 square feet or more. I’ve found the best way to dry out smaller spaces is to use an inexpensive but high quality small dehumidifier.

If you’re faced with the same situation of a humid, moist closet or bathroom you know the problems it can cause. The moisture can get in your clothes in the closet and cause mold or mildew growth. Before I put a dehumidifier in my closet, my wife found mold on one of her dresses that she hadn’t worn in a while and she was furious, and rightly so. Mold and mildew can just destroy your clothes. In your bathroom it’s the same situation, high humidity can cause mold to grow, peal the paint from your walls, and cause wood to rot. So, what’s the answer to this problem? I found the Eva-Dry Edv-2200 Dehumidifier to be one of the best models on the market for lowering humidity levels in small spaces. It’s efficient, high quality, and very affordably priced. Read on to find out more.

Small Yet Highly Effective

The Eva-Dry Edv-2200 Dehumidifier is the product you need if you wish to eliminate moisture and mold in your home. Those who live in humid areas can benefit a lot from the compact-sized Edv-2200. Place this on the floor or on a table and it will extract moisture efficiently without making a lot of noise.

The Edv-2200 is only 14 inches tall, compared to some other portable dehumidifiers that are as tall as 25 inches. It is portable so you can position it anywhere you like. It weighs less than 7 lbs and is quite compact for its size. However, you can count on the fact that it will effectively dehumidify a room even as it is tucked away from sight.

Edv-2200 may be smaller than other household dehumidifiers out there but it has a higher efficiency rating for mid to small sized areas. This product is recommended for spaces of 2,200 cubic feet or less. Cubic feet can be calculated by multiplying the length, width, and height of a room. So to get 2,200 cubic feet you would have a room that is roughly 16 feet x 17′ x 8′ (length x width x height). So the Eva Dry EDV 2200 dehumidifier is perfect for large walk-in closets, bathrooms, and other small rooms.

Outstanding Drying Ability and Easy to Use

The Eva Dry Edv-2200 dehumidifier is easy to install and clean. You just plug it in and turn it on. It comes with a 12 volt DC 6 Amp power adaptor and will use about 72 watts of power while it’s running. It is made from high quality materials and operates using a state of the art system known as Peltier technology. This means that there is no compressor used in the product which is why it is quiet and efficient at the same time.

Peltier technology uses two different types of materials, one of each side of the cooling component in the dehumidifier. An electric current passes through both materials and hot air moves from one material to the other. As the hot air moves from one side to the other it cools and condenses. Condensation is when water vapor forms like what you see around a cold can of Coke sitting on the table during a hot summer day. The water condensate then drops into a collection bucket for you to empty and dry air blows out of the Eva Dry back into the room.

The Eva Dry EDV 2200 Is A Silent Humidity Eradicator

One of the most liked features of Edv-2200 is the fact that it is relatively quieter than other brands, particularly the larger ones. Full-sized dehumidifiers can be really loud but not Edv-2200. Therefore, you can place it in bedrooms and your sleep will not be disturbed. If you have had a space heater or an air purifier before, you already know how troubling the noise level can be. Nevertheless, you will not be expecting this from Edv-2200 because it does not emit much sound.

Full Bucket Indicator Light

Edv-2200 provides an indicator for its users. When the tank is filled with moisture, the yellow indicator light will turn on to let you know that it is time to empty the water that has filled up in the reservoir. This helpful feature makes the product quite comprehensive and also aids in easy maintenance. The machine will also turn off when the bucket is full which prevents any potential spills that could occur with a reservoir that overflows.

Good Points

Inexpensive – This dehumidifier is not as expensive as its counterparts on the market. For under $100, you will find that this product is quite reasonably-priced in contrast to other commercial grade items which can cost well over $300.

Low energy use – The EDV 2200 only uses 72 watts of power, which is less than a 100 watt light bulb. You can plug it in and use it daily for an entire month. You will only notice that there is a slight increase on your electric bill.

Small and compact – Perfect to hide away in a closet or bathroom.

Easy to operate – Just plug it in and turn it on. There are no settings to program.

Bad Points

Not efficient for larger spaces – If you need a space larger than 2,200 cubic feet dehumidified than you’ll need to upgrade to a larger model. However the Eva Dry is perfect for medium and smaller sized spaces. Place this unit anywhere in your home where humidity is a day-by-day occurrence and you will see that this is the perfect solution for such a problem.

No air filter – I would like to see an air filter on this unit like most other dehumidifiers have. It would help with the removal of some dust that I see in my closets.

You can read more about the features and care of this model in the Eva Dry EDV 2200 dehumidifier owner’s manual.

Positive Customer Comments

Most users of the Eva Dry EDV 2200 dehumidifier are quite impressed at how well it performs. For months after purchase, they never seem to experience mold growth or other related issues. A lot of buyers have commented how the air quality has improved ever since they started using the unit. Those who live in a muggy or humid climate will definitely see a huge difference.

When it rains, consumers comment that their room may feel a little drenched from humidity. This is unquestionably not relaxing especially during sleeping hours. After purchasing the Edv-2200, that uncomfortable feeling is eliminated. Of course, owners of the product are more than pleased with the cost of the dehumidifier.

Even for discriminating consumers, the Edv-2200 is able to meet their requirements and expectations. The fact that the product is efficient without making a lot of noise has provided it with top marks. In addition, the minimal moving parts of the machine do not disturb owners. Since there are no compressors, refrigerant systems, and annoying squeaking and clanking sounds, this product is the supreme choice for getting rid of mold spores around the house.

The attractive design is also a huge plus. Owners mention that it is similar to a one-foot-tall egg which most users consider appealing. Although it is usually placed in hidden areas, positioning it on a table or in other visible areas is not a bad idea. Since it is portable, this unit can be easily moved from one room to another. Some users prefer to place the dehumidifier in different locations every 24 hours.

Negative Customer Comments

As for negative comments, the small bucket size is an issue for some consumers. This is a compact dehumidifier with a 4.2 pint water collection bucket and a daily dehumidifying capacity of 1.3 pints. If you have a really humid room, the bucket will fill up in about 3 days.

Another issue was the efficiency of this unit compared to larger models. Some owners compared their much large compressor style units to the Eva Dry EDV 2200 and found that the larger units use less energy to pull the same amount of moisture out of the air. Larger units are more efficient when comparing dehumidifying capacity to energy consumption. However they cost a lot more, they use much more power overall, 800 to 1,000 watts, and they take up a lot more space. If you have a large room or basement they are the best option, but for a closet or small room, they don’t make sense. The EDV 2200 is one of the best options for smaller spaces.

There were also several reports of the 12V AC adaptor heating up too much. This could be an issue so make sure you check it and keep it in a well ventilated spot, not tucked under some heavy sweaters in your closet.

Overall the ratings are good for the Eva Dry with over 165 owners giving it an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars on Amazon.com. You can read more Eva-Dry Edv-2200 Dehumidifier reviewsby clicking here.

Best Place to Buy

I recommend picking up the EDV 2200 on Amazon.com. They offer free shipping and frequently run big discounts. When I last checked, they were offering this model for a 37% discount, which is pretty good in my book. Click here to get the lowest price on the Eva-Dry Edv-2200 Dehumidifier.

Conclusion

All in all, this inexpensive dehumidifier is a product that is worth the investment. It can easily help prevent mold growth in carpet and clothes without problems. This highly recommended Edv-2200 mid-size dehumidifier will dry out and get rid of mold and mildew in your home or office quite effectively.

A piano can be a very expensive musical instrument so you want to keep it in as good a condition as you can. A potential source of damage is excess humidity. High levels of moisture and humidity can damage both the wood and metal parts of your piano, making it warp and rust, which will really affect the pitch and tone of the notes. All musicians know that wood expands and contracts as the weather changes. These environmental changes can wreak havoc if left untreated on your wooden instrument. Humidity is one of the greatest enemies to your piano.

If the humidity levels are not lowered to an acceptable level, it will cause trouble with the action of your keys, the quality of music, and the health of your piano. To keep your piano at a top notch level you must have a dehumidifier set between 40%-50% relative humidity. This will keep your piano at the best quality for playing the music you love and also to stop permanent damage.

How Humidity Affects Your Piano

Most people when they first start out playing the piano get a cursory introduction to how the instrument actually works. A sound board amplifies the sound of the piano. The piano strings press down on a bridge, which conducts the vibration to the soundboard. There is enormous pressure caused by the strings on the soundboard. Without the soundboard, you could not hear the music of your piano.

Humidity affects the grain of wood by swelling the sound board. This adds additional pressure to it. The force of this pressure causes what is called a pressure ridge, causing problems with the action of your piano. Also in times of high humidity your piano keys can become sticky and unable to bounce back up after you press them. This can cause sluggish action and make the keys very unresponsive. In extremely dry conditions the pitch of your piano becomes flat. Whereas in wet humid conditions the pitch becomes overly sharp. It’s best to try and keep moisture and humidity levels as stable as possible, preferably in the 40% to 50% range.

All the wooden parts of your piano are affected by humidity. Also the strings and pins in your piano develop rust which can affect the quality of sound in your large instrument. Keeping your piano in the best shape is any pianist’s goal, which means that getting a piano dehumidifier that will help your piano have a long life.

What Are Your Piano Dehumidifier Options?

You have a couple of options to lower the humidity for your piano. You can choose a room dehumidifier that will lower the moisture level for the entire room surrounding your piano, which is probably the best choice. The other option is to choose a small dehumidifier that will fit down into the piano and keep the internal parts dry. This option is cheaper than the larger units, if you get an off the shelf product and put it in yourself. There are a couple of specially designed internal dehumidifiers that run $500 to $600 plus an extra cost for professional installation. You can compare this to a large 70 pint stand alone dehumidifier that will run you $200 to $250.

I think the best choice for a piano dehumidifier is a portable room dehumidifier because it can lower the humidity in the whole room, not just the inside of the piano. Who wants to sit in a humid room, sweating while trying to play the piano? However, if you have a very expensive Baby Grand for example, and you want to be sure all of the internal parts are at the right humidity levels, then you may want to look at a professionally installed system. The one I recommend is the Piano Life Saver System. It needs to be professionally installed by a piano technician and can cost you up to $800, not including the cost of installation, which will have to be separately quoted by the technician. This system also includes a humidifier to keep the piano from drying out if the relative humidity levels get too low.

If you want something quite a bit cheaper that work very well, a portable room dehumidifier is the way to go. Plus you’ll be able to move it around to other areas of your home when you want. Below are the models that I recommend. Make sure to base your decision on the size of the room where your piano is located. You can read more about Choosing A Dehumidifier in another article I have on this site.

Dehumidifiers and How They Work

A dehumidifier takes the water from the air, making the home comfortable to live in. It also helps to get rid of pests such as cockroaches, fleas, moths, wood lice and dust mites, which thrive in a highly humid environment. It can dry out the air and help to destroy mold and mildew which cause sickness. Also home dehumidifiers control the water in the air so that your piano will have a longer life with less tuning.

Once the dehumidifier is turned on, the fan pulls the water-laden air into the machine, across cold coils. The coils draw in moisture from the surrounding air and dry, warm air flows out the sides or back of the machine. The water collects on the coils and then drips down into a bucket through a condensation process similar to the water you see collecting on a cold soda can left out in a warm room. To get the water out of the bucket you can remove it by hand and use it to water your houseplants or set up a hose to let it automatically drain to a sump drain in the floor.

Conclusion

The beauty of a piano’s music can be destroyed by humidity in the air. Dehumidifiers are the best way to protect your instrument.

There are many dehumidifiers on the market, and you want the best for your piano. A piano is an investment that will last many years with proper care. Investing in a high quality piano dehumidifier is an excellent idea that will pay you back a thousand fold.

You will be playing for many years and bringing enjoyment to yourself and others so you want to do everything in your power to protect your instrument.

You can look forward to the Haier DE45EJ-l Dehumidifier leaking water all over your carpet.

As I’ve been out and about researching and testing dehumidifiers for this website I’ve found quite a few really outstanding models, but I have also run into many duds. These models just don’t cut it. They are prone to breakdowns, don’t dehumidify nearly as well as they are promoted to be able to do so, and just generally are of very low quality. So, I thought it would be helpful to you and the other visitors to this site to provide a list of not only the best dehumidifiers, but also the worst. These are models you should avoid. Save your money. And if you want to know what I do recommend, check out my article on the Best Dehumidifier models.

I tried to look for a pattern here with these low quality models, like just mini-dehumidifiers or just certain brands were of poor quality, but I really couldn’t find one. The worst dehumidifier list runs the full spectrum, from mini-dehumidifiers with a half pint capacity all the way up to large 65 pint capacity models. They also run across brand names, with a few surprises from some well know names. So here’s the list.

#1 Worst Dehumidifier – The Amcor MD250 Mini Dehumidifier

The Amcor MD250 Mini-dehumidifier is only good for about 6 months.

In general large capacity dehumidifiers are more efficient than smaller capacity models. They are able to pull more water from the air using less energy. But often if you have a small space like a closet or bathroom that needs drying out, it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot of money to get a big unit. A smaller dehumidifier can work just fine in most cases. Unfortunately that’s not the case with the Amcor MD250 mini dehumidifier.

This model sounds great on paper. It uses the virtually silent Peltier technology to remove up to a half pint or 250ml of water per day from the air. It has a washable air filter, a water tank that is easy to remove, and a warning light that lets you know when the tank is full so you can empty it. All good features for a mini dehumidifier. But when you start to look at people’s experiences with the Amcor, you start to see another story.

Owners talk about this unit working for a month or two then breaking down, making weird loud noises, not dehumidifying, and not working at all. When customers with these broken units tried to contact Amcor customer service for refunds, they almost all had problems, and when trying to get the unit replaced, they had to pay for shipping costs. When owners received new Amcors through the one year warranty replacement, the new units broke within a couple months as well. Not a good track record for this company. Most people say that the Amcor dehumidifier is good only for about 6 months or less.

In some cases the Amcor mini dehumidifier rarely collected water from the air, making it all but useless. All of this is reflected in the reviews, with an average rating of 1.8 out of 5 stars. Over 68% of reviewers gave their Amcors 1 star, which is the worst rating possible.

So the bottom line is save yourself a lot of hassles and stay away from this model.
#2 Worst Dehumidifier – The Comfort-Aire BHD-651D 65 Pint Dehumidifier

The Comfort-Aire 65 Pint Dehumidifier has a lot of problems with its fan breaking.

Comfort-Aire has a really good reputation in the dehumidifier industry. Most of their models are highly rated and offer very good quality. However any company can have problems and Comfort-Aire seems to have dropped the ball on this 65 pint capacity model. Although it is Energy Star rated and designed to dehumidify areas up to 1,300 square feet, it really performs poorly.

There are numerous owner reports of the Comfort-Aire BHD-651D 65 pint dehumidifier breaking down after just a few months of operation. It seems the plastic fan, connection rod, and motor are all cheaply made, resulting in burnouts and breakage. Owners who tried to get their machine repaired because they were under warranty said it was a real hassle and often the dehumidifier broke again a few months after the repair. When the unit did work, most people said it worked poorly, running very loudly for long periods of time with minimal decreases in humidity levels. It even heated up the room, which during the summer is a big negative. They also said it really ran their electric bill up, to add insult to injury.

The Comfort-Aire 65 pint dehumidifier is not cheap, over $250, so you would expect that by paying a higher price you’ll get a better quality product. That doesn’t seem to be the case at all with this machine. Out of 22 reviews on Amazon.com the average rating was 2.1 out of 5 stars with 60% of owners giving this model 1 star – the lowest possible rating. You can read more about the Comfort-Aire 65 Pint Dehumidifierhere.

#3 Worst Dehumidifier – The LG 45 Pint Portable Dehumidifier

The LG 45 pint dehumidifier usually fails right after its 1 year warranty expires.

LG is another well known brand that makes many household appliances including refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. I was surprised to see this model performing so poorly. It sounds great. It is Energy Star rated, has an electronic control panel, and even comes with a 1 year warranty on the whole machine and a 5 year warranty on the compressor. When you look closer though, this LG dehumidifier is one of the worst rated dehumidifiers I’ve seen. Over 77% of owners give this model a dismal 1 out of 5 stars, which is the absolute lowest rating possible. Here’s why.

It seems most everything works on this machine; the fan, control panel, the settings; everything but the dehumidifying function. In other words it fails to collect enough water to really do any drying. For those who received a product that worked, it inevitably failed right around the time of the warranty expiration. It’s funny how that works! If it failed before the warranty, as happened in many cases, replacement units broke down as well within a year. A couple of customers even went through three replacement units. I think I would have given up after two, but I guess they were thinking three strikes and you’re out.

I think the general consensus on the LG 45 pint dehumidifier is that it’s junk. If you care to read some more LG 45 Pint Portable Energy Star Dehumidifier reviews, which are kinda funny (of course not to the people who bought this product), you can click here.

#4 Worst Dehumidifier – The Haier DE45EJ-L 45 Pint Dehumidifier

Rarely have I seen a product with only 1 star ratings. And that applies to a variety of different products from electronics to treadmills. Someone has to like the product a little, right? Well apparently that’s not so with the Haier DE45EJ-L dehumidifier. It gets one star ratings from everyone across the board. Now there are not a lot of reviews for this model so someone may come along and have a really good experience with it and give it a loving 5 star rating. I won’t hold my breath though.

For about $185 this model offers an LCD display, a 24 hour timer, 45 pint dehumidifying capacity, and a lot of headaches. Expect it to empty water all over your floor, ruining your carpet, as the automatic shut off function fails to work correctly. Then expect customer service to ignore you when you try to get the unit replaced under its warranty. Then when, or if, you get your new unit, expect it to fail within a year as well. You can even expect the second unit to leak refrigerant onto your floor. (All actual owner experiences.) Again, the reviews on the Haier DE45EJ-L 45 Pint Dehumidifierare comical. Check them out.

#5 Worst Dehumidifier – The Royal Sovereign BDH-550 Dehumidifier

The Royal Sovereign BDH-550 Dehumidifier is prone to pump failures.

The last model to make my list is the Royal Sovereign BDH-550 dehumidifier. Royal Sovereign is a huge international company that makes all kinds of products from dehumidifiers to air conditioners to bill counters to paper shedders. I’m not sure about their other products, but their dehumidifiers seem to be seriously lacking in quality.

The Royal Sovereign 55 pint dehumidifier’s main selling point is the fact that it doesn’t have a water bucket you need to empty. It has an automatic water hose pump that sends the collected water out to a sink or drain or window that can be up to 10 feet higher than the dehumidifier base unit. That’s pretty good in my book; set it and forget it, but what’s the reality? The reality is you get a really noise dehumidifier that will more than likely break down on you after a few months. With an average rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars, with over half of the reviews coming in at 1 star, the Royal Sovereign dehumidifier has a lot of bad feedback.

Most reviewers report pump failures just after the one year warranty expires. Owners that had pump failures while the unit was still under the one year warranty had very difficult times with dealing with customer service. At a price of $250 you would expect more out of this machine.

There were a few positive reviews for the Royal Sovereign but most of these were coming from customers who had just received their units or had been using them for just a few weeks. So the real problems had not yet started to crop up. You can read more about the Royal Sovereign BDH-550 Dehumidifierhere.

So there is my list of the worst dehumidifiers. Hopefully by putting out this list I’ve saved you some money and a lot of headaches. That last thing you want is a dehumidifier that breaks down repeatedly or even dumps water back onto your floor in a wet room you’re trying to dry out. On a positive note, there are a lot of really high quality dehumidifiers on the market. Take a look around this site and find one that can dry out your home.

If you have a damp room in your home and you spend a lot of time there, you need a dehumidifier that is quiet, efficient, small, and low priced. The Frigidaire FAD301NUD fits the bill perfectly. It can pull 30 pints of water out of the air in a 24 hour period and cover an area of roughly 600 square feet. At its high setting it’s only about 58 decibels which sounds like a quiet conversation between two people, making it perfect for your bedroom. It’s basically like background noise so you can run it at night and still get a restful sleep.

The compact size of the FAD301NUD is also a big plus. It’s just over a foot and a half tall and 14 inches wide so it will easily fit snuggly in the corner of your room. There’s no need for a big, powerful, expensive unit in your bedroom or living room unless they are giant master suits or if they are really wet. If you have a humid basement then of course you need to upgrade to a powerful 70 pint unit to get the job done. But for your bedroom, bathroom, or living room the Frigidaire FAD301NUD dehumidifier is the perfect choice. Here is what you can expect from this model.

The Frigidaire FAD301NUD Dehumidifier is a popular model due to its many helpful features and the cutting edge technology that are integrated to make it safer and more user-friendly. Customers have great things to report after buying the unit, owing to the compact design, forward-thinking electronic safeguards and ease of use. Some of the best features of the FAD301NUD are the easy, ergonomic handle conveniently placed at the top, casters on the bottom for easy movement from room to room, and the smart shut off and alerts when the water level is getting full. The Energy Star compliance rating makes the dehumidifier an economical and environmentally conscious product. To meet the humidity control needs of any room without uncomfortable heat or noise, the Frigidaire FAD301NUD Dehumidifier is an excellent choice for the savvy shopper.

Auto-Defrost Keeps Things Running

Among the many attributes that make the Frigidaire FAD301NUD dehumidifier so impressive is its smart and intuitive programming. There are several systems within the small unit that operate autonomously. The automatic defrost mechanism is of great value to homeowners who like to leave the system on during the day, or running it while they sleep.

Sometimes when the temperature drops down low enough, ice will form on the inside of the unit around the coils that collect water from the surrounding atmosphere through condensation. A sensor in the FAD301NUD will detect when ice is forming on the cold coils and shut the machine off. The auto-defrost function is designed to optimize the dehumidification process and to protect the motor from unnecessary stresses. When the sensor detects that the ice is melted, the machine will turn back on automatically and start dehumidifying again automatically.

The Smart Alert/Shut Off System Makes Water Removal A Breeze

The Frigidaire FAD301NUD dehumidifier was designed with two systems that work together to notify owners that the water container is getting full and then shut the unit off to prevent water overflow. The first of these systems is an alert that is designed to chime and light up as a notification that the water level is getting close to the top. When the alert is ignored or the water basin goes otherwise un-emptied, the smart technology will cycle the unit down to prevent overflows. This will also protect the machine and your floor from any water damage. These features work together to allow you to leave the room or the building without the worry of maintaining the dehumidifier.

When it comes time to remove the water from the unit, it’s very easy. The container slides out of the front and has a convenient handle for you to carry it off and dump the water. You can even use the water to water your plants if you want. If you want complete hands off operation, you can set up continuous drainage.

Continuous Drainage Capabilities: A Great Time-Saving Feature

One of the features on the Frigidaire FAD301NUD that has a particularly appealing ring to it is the ability to allow continuous drainage of the water. The continuous flow feature is represented by a valve fitting that can be hooked up to a hose going to a drain or sump pump. This feature relieves you from having to empty the water containment bucket each time it fills. Note that the machine must be placed above the level at which the drain is located in order for gravity to work and keep the water moving.

The hose is not included with the FAD301NUD, however you can use any standard garden hose. Also if you don’t want to rely on gravity for the water removal, you can purchase a condensate pump that will pull the water out of the unit and pump it where you want it to go, like to a sink for example.

Effective and Mobile: A Double Threat!

This smaller sized, Frigidaire 30-pint daily production model is designed for use in smaller rooms but remains mobile enough to stay versatile. With the handle on the top it is simple enough to pick up from above, however, the addition of handles on each side make two-handed carrying easy for those who may need a little more help. At 29 pounds though, the FAD301NUD shouldn’t be too hard to pick up and carry for almost anyone. Casters are also placed on the bottom to make moving even easier. This is the most portable unit that Frigidaire makes and is the perfect addition to any room where airborne moisture is a problem.

Automatic Humidity Control Setting

When the moisture level fluctuates on a regular basis, the Frigidaire FAD301NUD dehumidifier is a great choice. The machine has a built in humidity control selection. You simply set the dial at the preferred setting which ranges from low power, which results in a more humid room, to a higher setting which will dry the room out more. Then simply let the dehumidifier do the rest. A humidity sensor in the molding will sense when the predetermined setting has been reached and the unit will shut down. Each time the humidity level is raised out of the pre-set range, the unit will turn back on automatically and repeat the previous cycle.

There is a Lot of Positive Buzz Circulating About the Frigidaire FAD301NUD Dehumidifier

The results of the review polls are in and the Frigidaire FAD301NUD Dehumidifier has the top spot among people who purchased one. There was the occasional report of a higher than expected noise level due to a vibration of the handle, but otherwise the comments from actual owners responded that their units operated at the specified level. The manufacturer’s page does state that the machine is capable of emitting sound no higher than 58.1 dB on the highest operation setting.

Overall, the reviewers mentioned that the dehumidifier performed as advertised, maintaining moisture levels at predetermined levels in small rooms and offices. While some complained of a lack of improvement in air quality, they were also using the one-room unit to dehumidify entire apartments. Following the manufacturer’s recommended use is highly suggested in order to maximize the benefit received by the product.

There were a couple of other negative comments about the autodrain function not working right. There is nothing in the Frigidaire FAD301NUD Dehumidifier owner’s manual about any special setup to get the continuous drain working. However, several owners say that you need to remove the Styrofoam block in the float that initiates the cutoff function. After doing this owners report the continuous drain working properly but the water container will fill up almost to the top before the water starts to drain.

You can read more Frigidaire FAD301NUD dehumidifier reviewshere.

Good

Knob is easy to adjust – Just turn the control knob to the desired humidity level.

Small unit size – Lightweight and easy to move around, the FAD301NUD is very compact and can be placed anywhere.

Easy to access the collection container – You pull it out of the front of the unit to empty it and it has a convenient handle to carry it to where you want to dump it out.

Nice location for the continuous drain hose hook up – This is located about midway up on the FAD301NUD which is good because it relies on gravity to drain the water out. Many units have the drain hook up located towards the bottom of the unit which makes drainage less efficient.

Cord wrap for storage – When the Frigidaire is not in use it has a nice storage area on the back where you can wrap the cord up.

Bad

Continuous drainage setup – It doesn’t say in the owner’s manual but in order to get the continuous drainage function to work you have to remove the polystyrene block located in the cut-off float in the water collection container. Of course if you don’t plan on using the auto-drain feature this won’t affect you.

No digital readout – I personally like to see an exact number for the relative humidity level in the room as well as an exact readout showing the humidity setting for the machine. The knob, even though it’s easy to use, just doesn’t seem that accurate to me.

No hose included – If you want to set up continuous drainage then you need to use your own garden hose.

Best Place to Buy

You can find the FAD301NUD at several online stores. After some online shopping I found the best price over at Amazon.com. They always have deals and specials over there and the FAD301NUD even comes with free shipping. I’ve always had great experiences with Amazon.

The Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifier will pull over 11 gallons of water out of the air each day and cover an area of 2,000 square feet. It’s a real beast, yet easily portable.

If you have a really large wet area or extremely humid conditions in your home, then the Aprilaire 1710A basement and crawlspace dehumidifier is the best option for you. There are not a lot of home models on the market that will handle 2,000 square feet and pull 11 gallons (90 pints) of water in 24 hours. You have to go up to much more expensive commercial or industrial dehumidifiers to get that kind of power.

The Aprilaire 1710A basement and crawlspace dehumidifier is the ideal solution for maintaining healthy level of humidity, and preventing moisture related problems. If the humidity level in your basement exceeds 60% regularly, it will become damp, and starts to emit a musty and foul odor. These are ideal conditions for the growth of fungi, mildew, mold, and variety of pathogens.

Apart from serious health problems, high humidity can cause considerable structural damage and rot. The Aprilaire 1710A is particularly suited for the cold conditions of a basement, and provides the convenience of easy installation and maintenance. Here are the main distinguishing features of this model that sets it apart from others in its category.

Easy Set Up

The Aprilaire 1710A is a freestanding portable dehumidifier, which means you don’t need to connect it to an HVAC duct system. It has a one-inch PVC outlet pipe that needs to be connected to a hose which then drains to a drain in the floor, or you can use a condensate pump to pump the water to a sink. This means you do not have to bother with emptying any collection tanks or reservoirs.

The casters make it easy to wheel it into place, even though the dehumidifier weighs close to a hundred pounds. The 1710A stands only 22 inches tall, has a width of 20.75 inches, and length of 24 inches, which makes it ideal for placement in constricted areas like crawlspaces. Wheeling the dehumidifier into position, plugging it into a 15 amp power outlet, and attaching the outlet hose to a drain is all the set up that is required.

Ideally Suited for Cold Temperatures

The basement is usually a cold place, and most portable dehumidifiers are not suitable for efficiently reducing humidity at low temperatures. With a smaller low capacity dehumidifier you might even need to use multiple units to get the humidity levels down in wet basements. The Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifier on the other hand is specially built to work efficiently at temperatures as low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4.4 degrees Centigrade), and effectively functions in a 2,000 square foot area.

Superior Dehumidification and Energy Efficient

Aprilaire 1710A basement and crawlspace dehumidifier can remove 11.25 gallons (90 pints) of moisture in a day, in conditions where the temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and 60% humidity. This is considered to be almost three times the water removal capacity, compared to other portable dehumidifiers of the same class.

This appliance uses a superior R410a refrigerant, which is not only eco-friendly, but proves to be highly efficient as well. This gives the best power to moisture removal ratio in this category of dehumidifiers. Other features that improve the energy efficiency are a well-designed ventilation system, frost protection, powerful CFM fan, and EPS cabinet insulation.

This video highlights some of the features of the Aprilaire 1710A.

Set Dryness to Individual Requirements

Most dehumidifiers work at their maximum capacity when they are turned on. However, the 1710A has a humidistat control, which enables you to set the level of moisture removal you require. This control has seven dryness settings, and proves to be particularly useful in places where the humidity fluctuates a great deal during the year.

Once the dryness level has been reached, the Aprilaire 1710A will shut off. As the humidity level rises again it will turn back on and start dehumidifying the air again.

Very Little Maintenance Is Required

Many dehumidifiers having collection reservoirs need frequent monitoring, and there is always a risk of overflow, or the unit shutting down when the reservoir is full. The Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifier does not require any monitoring as the water is automatically drained off, and can be left on without any problem.

The superior MERV 8 air filter not only provides superior air quality, but is simple to maintain as well. This filter is easily accessible, and is made of aluminum so that it can be easily cleaned, with detergent and warm water. Such cleaning is usually required only once a year.

Feedback on Performance

An LED panel on the unit provides easy to understand figures, which indicate the level of performance, and report on the operation of the unit. The panel will provide adequate feedback when there is something wrong with the unit, so that maintenance personnel can be called in time to avoid further complications.

Pros

Removes a lot of water – The Aprilaire 1710A removes almost three times more moisture than other models – 11.25 gallons.

Ideal for low temperature operation – Works fantastically well in your cold basement in temperatures as low as 40 degrees F (4.44 C).

Really dries out the air – In reviews from other owners, many users have experienced a greater level of dryness even in the worst months when the humidity goes beyond 80%. The power consumption also increased only marginally, even when the unit was running at full capacity.

Nice long 5 year warranty – This is a good sign of the high quality of the Aprilaire 1710A. If there is a problem during those 5 years, they’ll fix it.

Cons

No collection bucket option – In some locations in your home you may not be able to set up automatic drainage so having a water collection bucket would be nice.

No humidistat digital readout – This is a bit annoying if you want to know exactly what the humidity level is in the room. You have to rely on the setting control knob which lets you set the dryness level. Also in the Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifier owner’s manual there is a detailed diagram showing the percent relative humidity level in the room based on the control knob setting and the indoor temperature. The relative humidity level ranges from 24% at a control knob setting of 7 (the driest) and an indoor temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit to 84% relative humidity at a knob setting of 1 (the wettest) and a temperature of 70 degrees F.

Not Energy Star rated – The Aprilaire 1710A is not Energy Star rated which is a bit of a negative in my opinion. That means it is not as energy efficient as other models with the certification. It pulls in about 1.64 liters of water from the air for every kilowatt of power used. The average energy factor for most 70 pint dehumidifiers is about 1.8 liters/kilowatt hour.

What Others Are Saying

Overall people are very happy with their Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifiers. They talk about how easy it is to install, as the drainage hose does not require ducting, and the hose can be even attached to an optional condensate pump when the water needs to be drained from a height.

Moving and maneuvering the unit is found to be convenient with the caster wheels, and they can be locked securely, when the unit is in position. The in-built humidistat provides optimal dryness, but moreover people appreciate the control that enables them to set the level of dryness. The outer build of the unit is quite rugged, which can take rough handling and rigorous use.

Some people prefer a collection bucket in houses that may not have a drainage system in the basement. However, such a situation can be easily remedied by draining the water into a sump, or attaching a condensate pump, and draining the water through a basin. The placement of the outlet PVC pipe is a bit low, according to some users. However, the unit can be installed at a height, by placing it on a small platform.

You can learn more about Aprilaire the company on their website.

Best Place to Buy

There are several online retailers selling the 1710A but I found the best deal on Amazon.com. You can even pick up any accessories you may need there like a condensate pump or hose. Click here to check for the latest deals on the Aprilaire 1710A Dehumidifier.

Conclusion

If you were looking for a reliable unit that can optimally remove moisture in a large wet area like your basement or crawlspace, then the Aprilaire 1710A dehumidifier is the ideal option. Superior designing and large dehumidifying capacity make it the best dehumidifier in its class.

It’s Not The Heat, It’s the Humidity

If you live in the midst of a thick, sweltering climate there are few machines more practical for your well-being than a quality dehumidifier. Whether you have allergies, respiratory problems, or simply have difficulty coping with humid, heavy air, a dehumidifier can be the difference between severe coughing and sweating and a pleasant night’s sleep. What’s more, children and infants can have much greater problems acclimatizing to a humid environment, making it crucial that their well being is taken care of by drawing high levels of water vapor out from the interior of a home. The Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier is one of the premier products for air treatment, capable of tackling large and medium sized rooms for easier breathing while sleeping, eating, and relaxing.

What is A Dehumidifier and Why Should You Get One?

If you live in a hot and humid area, getting a good night’s rest may be difficult, if not impossible. Night sweating as a result of air moisture will keep you from staying cool and dry. Health problems are not the only concern for persons interested in a dehumidifier, however. The quantity of moisture in the air affects the growth rate of fungi, most notably molds and mildew. Mildew can eat away at fabric and some porcelain surfaces, while mold — especially black mold, which is potentially lethal to infants — can cause severe respiratory infections and complications. What’s more, insects prefer a humid environment and will flock to a house for the tantalizing combination of shelter, food, and moisture. Clothes moths that devastate a wardrobe, cockroaches that spread disease, fleas that aggravate pets, or dust mites that inflame allergies are all pests that enjoy a building with higher levels of air moisture.

How Can the Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier Help You?

The Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier is an efficient and near-silent means of getting the excess water vapor out of the atmosphere of a room. Capable of treating five hundred square feet — an area the size of a studio apartment — this handy little machine can draw as much as sixty-five pints of water from the air each day. That is a quantity of water equal to the size of an eight gallon fish tank!

The water pulled out of the air is collected in a tank that can hold ten liters of water, so changing it is necessary every day or so. But removing the water is very simple. You can take out the tank and dump the water into a sink or bathtub, or outdoors. Or you can attach a garden hose (not included) to the unit and let the water automatically drain into a drain in the floor.

Two fan settings allow for the Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier to treat air moisture at a high or moderate rate, while a one-touch control panel makes it easy to adjust or activate the machine. It can be used indoors, in offices, in whatever room where the relative moisture level must be kept at a steady, safe level. You can adjust the level of relative humidity in the air, ranging from thirty-five to eighty percent depending on how muggy and thick the day is. A normal building will have thirty to fifty percent humidity, which is the level that most of us feel comfortable at.

The Sunpentown includes many safeguards for protection, including an automatic shut-down when the bucket fills to avoid spillage. The energy efficiency of the Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier is well above that of its competitors, earning EPA certification through the Energy Star program for the strict guidelines on electrical efficiency. Its Energy Star rating places it amongst some of the most efficient products on the market, that allow customers to utilize up to one third less power (and lower their monthly bills correspondingly). With a one-year warranty, the Sunpentown offers peace of mind for customers concerned about failure rates or difficulties with heavier humidity environments.

What Do Other Owners Say About It?

Customer opinion about the Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier is almost universally positive. It boasts a perfect rating from well over half the responders on surveys, with only five percent of customers reporting extreme dissatisfaction with their purchase. Some report it being so quiet that they are not even sure if it is working, as the fan can be ultra silent on the lower settings. The controls and instructions are quite intuitive — “idiot proof”, in the words of one customer — while the settings allow for a wide range of climate controls.

The ability of the machine to take care of itself, such as the auto shutoff and the auto restart after a power failure, ensure that you do not have to worry about turning it on and off unless you want to. At just over two hundred dollars, it is well priced relative to many other dehumidifiers on the market: more expensive options are capable of tackling larger rooms, apartments, basements, offices, or even entire houses, but can cost considerably more than the Sunpentown.

Some customers claim that the device does not work to full standards during the winter time, but that the tradeoff in performance (rising from thirty percent humidity to forty percent humidity in below-freezing temperatures) is typical with nearly all dehumidifiers. Some claim that it was incapable of drying out larger areas than the five hundred foot maximum, though these customers had no problems with areas within the recommended guidelines. Only a few claimed it to be loud, often due to a faulty compressor unit, but even then did not claim any displeasure at its efficiency in reducing the moisture level of their home.
Best Place To Buy

There are a few online retailers offering Sunpentown dehumidifiers. I checked several and compared prices. I found the best deal by far on Amazon.com. When I conducted my research Amazon was offering the SD65E for 25% off and offering free shipping. That’s a fantastic deal in my book. Head on over to Amazon by clicking here and pick up a Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifierbefore they run out!

The Final Verdict

A dehumidifier may be an essential product to own if you live in a humid area of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest or the Atlantic Southeast, where your property and health are more vulnerable to the moisture. The Sunpentown SD-65E Dehumidifier is one of the best buys available on the market, offering a competitive price for a good quality machine that can keep a large area free from potentially hazardous humidity levels. It has, furthermore, settings that allow it to operate automatically, so that you don’t need to concern yourself with its day to day operation. Just let it do its job – something it does very, very well.

Often you don’t need a big industrial machine to solve a small problem. Why spend a fortune when a small investment will take care of your needs? This certainly applies to dehumidifiers. If you have a relatively small area like a closet, half bath, or cabinet that just stays damp all the time, why buy a large capacity dehumidifier to dry it out? A small dehumidifier is all you need to take care of the problem and it will cost you a lot less.

Higher levels of humidity usually cause many types of problems in households. It can result in build-up of bacteria and molds, causing musty odors, which not only affects your health, but can also cause structural damage to your home. The only solution lies in bringing down the humidity level, and this can be effectively done with dehumidifiers. Your requirements will mainly depend on the space you want to dehumidify, and usually for smaller areas, a small dehumidifier is the ideal choice. However, even among the small dehumidifiers, there are different capacity models, and the process of dehumidification may differ.

Types of Small Dehumidifiers

Apart from their capacity, the main categorization of small dehumidifiers is based on how they work, and the process they use for removing moisture.

Desiccant Dehumidifiers

These types of dehumidifiers use a moisture absorbing substance like silica crystals to collect the moisture from the air. This device is usually used in very small areas as it can absorb around 10 ounces of moisture. The device indicates the level of saturation by a color code, and once it reaches the maximum, it has to be plugged into a power source, in a properly ventilated area like your garage, or even outside. The device has a small built-in heater that warms the crystals, expanding them, and releases the moisture. It usually takes about 12 hours to “renew” the crystals and then you can put the unit back into use. Many of these types of desiccant dehumidifiers can last for up to 10 years. This type of dehumidifier is suitable for small areas like wardrobes, cupboards, bathrooms, small bedrooms, RVs, and boat cabins.

Peltier Dehumidifier

These electronic units use the Peltier effect to remove moisture from the air. It creates a cool surface in the machine usually by using coils, so that the moisture in the air starts to condense. The condensed water is collected in a detachable container that can be emptied. The only moving part on this type of dehumidifier is the fan, so they tend to be pretty quiet.

Compared to the desiccant dehumidifier, the Peltier has a higher capacity of moisture removal and can run continuously, as only the collected water needs to be emptied. You can even run a hose from many models in this category to automatically drain the collected water, making the unit nearly completely hands off. Depending on their size, these units can remove up to 30 pints of moisture in a day.

The Advantages of Small Dehumidifiers

They are ideal for small areas and their small size makes them very portable.

The desiccant type of humidifier does not require power during operation. Hence, it does not need wiring, and can be placed anywhere.

You can save your clothes from catching mildew, and eliminate musty odors from wardrobes.

Formation of mold and fungus can be eliminated in bathrooms and other small rooms.

It can protect your costly electrical equipment from moisture damage.

They do not require any type of duct or drainage installation.

Power consumption is very low.

Disadvantages

Small dehumidifiers are not suitable for big rooms. They may not be effective when the humidity level rises drastically.

The humidity level may not decrease as fast as you want.

Since they cover a small area, you will have to buy multiple units and place them around the house, if you have multiple small problem areas.

You need to check the unit frequently, to see if the water needs to be emptied from the collection tank. This applies to desiccant models and peltier models without automatic drain capability.

Points to Consider While Shopping for a Small Dehumidifier

The most important point to consider is the level of humidity in your area. If you face high humidity of more than 80% for most part of the year, then a small dehumidifier is not appropriate for your needs. However, these units can be used along with bigger dehumidifiers that will be taking care of the major areas of your house. The smaller units can be placed inside wardrobes, crawl spaces, bathrooms, and cabinets. Smaller units are very inexpensive so buying several of them, if you need to, won’t break the bank.

If you are living in an area where the humidity rises only marginally in certain months, then small dehumidifiers are ideal. The Peltier types can be used in small rooms, and the desiccant dehumidifiers can be placed in wardrobes and cabinets.

For Peltier models estimate the amount of electricity these small units will be consuming, and whether they are economical, for the level of moisture they are eliminating. Compare the economy provided by bigger models as you might find a better cost to work ratio. In other words larger units tend to be more efficient in terms of the number of liters of water removed from the air per kilowatt hour of energy used.

Popular Models

These are two models that rank very high in terms of owner reviews and quality. They are affordable, perfect for smaller spaces and tend to be very efficient at removing moisture.
