My goal on this site is to provide you with the best information on dehumidifiers so that you can make an intelligent purchase decision. Having a home with humidity at the recommended levels makes for a healthy environment for you and your family and keeps mold and mildew at bay. You’ll also feel cooler during the summer with air that is less humid.
The dehumidifiers that I recommend on this site represent only the best of the best. Each one is Energy Star certified and has a proven track record of efficiency and durability. They also have high ratings and recommendations from owners and experts alike.

I found a lot of this information while conducting research for this site and thought I’d pass it along to you in case you wanted to read even more.
Government Organizations and Nonprofit Associations
Because dehumidifiers deal with air quality there are several government organizations and nonprofit associations that research the quality of these devices. The US Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy will review and test dehumidifiers to see if they meet stringent criteria to be designated Energy Star certified. Models with the certification are able to remove the same amount of moisture in the air as other models in the same category, but they are able to do so using 10 to 23% less energy. The Energy Star label was created to help consumer find and buy high performing products that will help them save on their energy bills, and to help reduce pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
Another great source of information is the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM). They have a handy chart on their website that helps you decide what capacity dehumidifier you need based on the size and condition of the area you need dehumidified. The AHAM also has an independent lab that tests the performance of dehumidifiers and other home appliances. With the dehumidifiers, they test several factors including the accuracy of manufacturer claims about energy usage and water removal capacity. Manufacturers have to pay to have their products tested.
Magazines and Independent Testing Labs
There are several magazines out there both in print and on the web that review and rate home appliances. The best of this group is Consumer Reports. Every other year or so, they put out a report on the best dehumidifiers. They put each machine through a series of rigorous tests looking at things like humidistat accuracy, noise levels, water removal capacity, frost control, and energy efficiency. Then they rate each machine and provide recommendations to buy or not buy. In their May 2011 issue, the GE ADER65LN dehumidifier was one of the top rated large capacity models.
The Allergy Buyers Club is another good source of information. They focus their analysis on dehumidifiers that can help people who suffer from allergies. They rate the machines that they look at on how efficient they are at lower humidity levels and the quality of their air filtering capability. All of the best dehumidifiers have high quality air filters that will remove air born particles like pollen, which can be a huge relief to people with allergies.
Good Housekeeping Magazine also takes a look at several dehumidifiers at their research institute. They look at noise level, effectiveness, and how easy to use the models are.
Another source of information that I found useful was the website HowStuffWorks.com. They talked about how dehumidifiers work to reduce the humidity in the air and they provided some useful tips on maintaining and repairing your dehumidifier. They also talk about the different types of dehumidifiers.
Owner Review Sites
There are a number of retail websites and stores that offer owners the opportunity to post a review and rate their dehumidifier. These are extremely helpful as you can really see which machines hold up well over time and which ones have problems. You can also see which models performed the best in tough conditions where the room is really damp. The good thing about owner reviews is that you can look at several different people’s viewpoints.
Amazon.com is the best of these types of sites. Amazon has done a wonderful job over the years of providing owner reviews and detailed information on a wide range of products. They have hundreds of owner reviews for some dehumidifier models. A lot of these reviews provide really detailed information about the features of the product as well as how it’s stood up over time.
