About
I live in the tropics along the northern coast of South America. You want to talk about humidity! We have a rainy season and a dry season with the average temperature staying around 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit. The dry season goes from about December to April and then the rainy season starts. And boy does it rain. I mean I’ve walked through water knee deep in the middle of the city. And in certain areas flooding makes roads impossible to drive on. And this happens like every other day.
Generally the rain storms come raging in for an hour or so and then stop with the sun coming out for a couple of hours before the rain starts again. During the dry season there is nothing but blue sky and sun. Outside of the flooding and especially during the dry season it’s a really beautiful place to live.
Being along the coast and having a lot of rain most of the year means that the humidity is real, real high. I didn’t realize how high until I looked at some of my clothes that had been sitting in the closet for a couple of weeks. They were all covered in dark mold! Now in the states I would have freaked out about this. Of course you hear so much about toxic mold in the US and how it can damage homes and even cause major health problems. That last thing I wanted was to have mold in the house and all over my clothes.
My wife asked around to some of the local people and found out that the mold was very common and not harmful at all. They said just brush it off and wash the clothes to get rid of the smell. Well, that’s all good, but it doesn’t really solve the problem, which is too much moisture in the air. I’ll tell you what does solve a problem like this, a good dehumidifier.
And so began my research into finding the best dehumidifier. The result is this website. I hope you like it and find it very useful. To come up with the best information, I didn’t want to just use my own opinion and personal experience, but I really wanted to research what the other experts have to say. There aren’t a lot of independent testing agencies that test dehumidifiers. One that does, and provides some really good information is Consumer Reports Magazine. They test their dehumidifiers based on how much water they pull out of the air, frost control, energy efficiency, how accurate the humidistat is, noise levels, and whether the unit is able to maintain the humidity level in its settings. Then they rank the dehumidifiers based on this criteria.
In addition to research from testing organizations, I also looked at consumer reviews from actual owners. Many owner reviews are very well written and provide some great information about dehumidifiers. The reviews from owners who have been using their units for several years provide good insight into the quality and durability of the dehumidifiers they were using. If they were running their units all the time for a couple of years and they still were able to dehumidify their homes then that shows pretty good quality and reliability. There are hundreds of dehumidifier reviews on Amazon.com as well as other retailers.
Looking at both scientific type testing organizations and consumer reviews you can get a pretty good picture of the best dehumidifiers on the market. And the best thing of all is that all the research is done for you right here on DehumidifierAuthority.com.
